Urgent Appeal: Join Our Effort to Rebuild and Re-equip Ayder Hospital in Mekelle, Tigray

February 23. 2024

Dear Valued Supporter,

In the heart of Mekelle, Tigray, stands Ayder Hospital, a beacon of hope that has, until recently, been a vital source of medical care and support to countless individuals and families. However, the devastating impact of the three-year-long conflict has left the hospital in ruins, stripping it of essential medical equipment and infrastructure. Today, more than ever, we are faced with an urgent need to rebuild and re-equip our hospital to continue serving our community.

The people of Mekelle, Tigray, have endured unimaginable hardship, and the restoration of Ayder Hospital represents a crucial step in their journey toward healing and recovery. We are reaching out to kind-hearted donors, organizations, and individuals worldwide to join hands in this critical mission. Your generosity can help us purchase badly needed medical equipment such as life-saving monitors, surgical tools, and essential medicines that are crucial for the hospital to function effectively.

Your support will not only help restore Ayder Hospital but also reignite hope within the heart of a community that has suffered greatly. Each contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant difference in the lives of thousands who depend on the hospital for medical care. We are committed to transparency and will ensure that every donation goes directly towards purchasing equipment and repairing the hospital infrastructure.

We understand that there are many demands on your generosity, but we plead with you to consider the unique and critical situation of Ayder Hospital. This is more than a call for donations; it is an appeal for solidarity with the people of Tigray, who deserve access to basic healthcare services. Together, we can rebuild Aider Hospital and provide a beacon of hope and healing in these challenging times.

For donations and further details on how you can help, please visit our website www.tdavan.org or e-mail us tdavancouverbc@gmail.com We are also happy to provide information on the specific equipment needed and updates on the progress of our restoration efforts.

Thank you for considering our urgent appeal. Together, we can make a difference.

Message from Dr. Felix Durity

July 10, 2021

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Felix Durity has joined TDAVAN as an Honourary Member.

Dear fellow citizens who care,

I am proud to be a member of the Tigray Development Association Vancouver Chapter, Canada (TDA VAN).  Currently, the Tigray region in Northern Ethiopia is being devastated by the destructive impact of an ongoing war with an Ethiopian-Eritrean Alliance. I am against the violence of war since it is always the children and women who pay the heaviest price. Today over 900,000 Tigrayans are suffering famine and almost 2.5 million are on the brink of starvation or have become displaced refugees. Humanitarian access is nearly impossible. Only 13% of the 106 health facilities are functioning. The Mission and Vison of TDA VAN is to provide humanitarian relief as urgently as is possible but also to assist in rebuilding the devastated community. Please join us in helping to meet the urgent humanitarian needs for health, medical and food supplies and join us in the more prolonged struggle of aiding in the enduring developmental reconstruction of education, health and skill development so Tigrayans can look forward to healthy, productive and meaningful lives.   Your kind support in both financial and supplies donations are urgently welcomed. Please go to TDAVAN.org to donate and make a difference in their lives.

Emergency Appeal

June 29, 2021

To all members, supporters, and donors,

The people of Tigray are currently going through unprecedented man-made suffering due to the conflict that was started on November 4, 2020, by the Federal Government of Ethiopia, under the guise of restoring law and order in the state of Tigray.

It appears that this time was deliberately chosen to disrupt the harvest season when farmers were expecting to harvest their crop that normally sustains and feeds their families for the entire year. This is also the time where they sell their excess crops in order to generate income.

Sadly, a huge swarm of locusts invaded Ethiopia in October severely damaging crops while still in the fields. Tigray was one of those places severely affected by the plague. Although the locust ravaged thousands of hectares of matured crops all over Ethiopia, the damage in Tigray was particularly unique because the Federal Government of Ethiopia intentionally refused to allow preventive air chemical spray that would have helped in combating the swarm of locusts.

The people resorted to taking measures on their own and did everything they could to combat the locust invasion by using traditional methods to protect their crops and succeeded in saving enough.

Unfortunately, just as they started to harvest what was left from the locust invasion, Tigray was invaded by close to half a million soldiers from the Federal Government of Ethiopia, Eritrea, the neighbouring state of Amhara, and Somalian soldiers from all directions. During this invasion towns were bombed, villages were totally looted and burned, their domestic animals were slaughtered and farm implements were purposefully destroyed.  Generally, every means the people depended on for their livelihoods like schools, health facilities, factories, farms, water distribution sources, businesses and places of worship have been deliberately destroyed. Soldiers used starvation and sexual violence as systematic weapons of war.

With 90% of their harvest lost during these eight months of conflict, there is now famine in Tigray. This coupled with the spread of COVID-19, almost the entire population of Tigray is in danger and in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.

Current situation:

·          Currently 90% of the population in Tigray is in extreme need of humanitarian

           assistance.

·          900,000 are in severe famine.  (Current USAID number)

·          33,000 children are in risk of death.

·          6,000 unaccompanied children.

·          Close to 2.5 million are internally displaced.

·          Over 65,000 people have fled to Sudan and they are currently being sheltered in

           UNHCR camps.

·          17million of Tigray’s domestic animals have been looted by soldiers and taken out

           of the state

·          Food aid donated by the US and WFP is still prevented from reaching the people in

           need.

·          22,500 female victims of sexual violence (8 years to 78 years old) and counting.

·          Out of 106 health facilities that existed prior to Nov 4, 2020 only 13% functioning now.

Appeal:

Taking into account the above situation in the state of Tigray, we would like to appeal to our members of TDA VAN (Tigray Development Association chapter in Vancouver, Canada), our esteemed supporters, and donors to contribute towards this urgent financial need and to help avert the current humanitarian catastrophe that is hanging over the people of Tigray.

The need is very immense and is currently estimated to be 120 million dollars. If Tigray is to survive this disaster, emergency food, medical aid, as well as all other recovery programs need to be mobilized immediately.

Thank you for your taking the time to understand this emergency appeal and donating to avert this crisis.
